Saving the environment, and saving your business money

Environmental issues couldn't be more topical - you only need to look at the general public’s reaction to the G8 Summit to see that these issues are close to people’s hearts. World leaders face such concerns on a global level; households are fast realising that using energy wisely can significantly reduce bills; and businesses are being asked to review their impact on the environment.

Companies are to follow a set of voluntary guidelines, issued by the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs, which will become compulsory if not followed. These voluntary guidelines cover 25 areas on which businesses should report, and include the management of waste, emissions of greenhouse gases, the extraction of water, and the use of resources such as fuel.

Elliot Morley, the Environment Minister, said: "These guidelines are good business practice, not red tape. I am very keen to work with the companies that are making good commitments in this area, but you always get those who drag their feet. If this develops well and companies embrace these guidelines there will be no need for regulation, but if there is poor progress we may have to revisit compulsion."

Sustainability is the careful balance between environmental and economic objectives. J. G. Regan Ltd helps a number of clients to review and manage their hard copy filing and to consider new ways of working: we encourage firms to become environmentally aware and so help them to reduce the impact they have on the environment.

Organisations across the world are recognising the need and the benefits of taking proactive steps to reduce energy usage. Minimising the amount of waste your company produces doesn't simply benefit the environment - it can also save your business money.

Seven steps to green your office
STEP ONE: USE RECYCLED OFFICE PAPERS.
Each year we use 750,000 tonnes of short life office papers in the UK. Of these 75% are imported and 90% are thrown away as if they were waste.

Paper waste prevention for offices
The paperless office is a myth. If anything, the convenience of computers, copy machines, faxes, and email have increased paper use.
